William "Bill" McDowell Berry, Jr., often affectionately known as Billy and called "Bubba" by his siblings, age 92, of Newnan, Georgia, passed away on January 4, 2026.

Born in Augusta, Georgia, in 1933, Bill was the son of Anne and Bill Berry. The family's home was close to Daniel Field airport; this proximity fueled at an early age a passion for planes and flying that would shape his entire life. At just fifteen years old, he cleaned hangars and airplanes at Daniel Field in Augusta in exchange for flying lessons. As a Civil Air Patrol exchange student, Bill was selected to travel to Switzerland, where he learned to fly gliders-an experience that further heightened his love of flight.

After graduating from the Academy of Richmond County, Bill attended the University of Georgia, where he earned a BA and received his commission as a second lieutenant in the United States Air Force. He served five years on active duty before joining the 158th Tactical Fighter Interceptor Squadron of the Georgia Air National Guard in Savannah. In 1968, he received an MA from George Washington University, concurrently graduating from the Air Command and Staff College. He was later reassigned to the 116th Tactical Fighter Group at Dobbins Air Force Base, where his leadership and dedication led to his appointment as Wing Commander of the 116th Tactical Fighter Wing. Promoted to Brigadier General, he served as Deputy Chief of Staff at the Georgia Air National Guard Headquarters. He continued his commitment to aviation, retiring as Acting Manager of the Flight Standards Division of the Federal Aviation Administration's Southern Region. Bill's career was marked by exceptional leadership, integrity, and a lifelong devotion to aviation.

In recognition of his service, he received the Legion of Merit, the nation's second-highest award for meritorious military achievement.

In retirement, he and Jane spent many cherished years at his family's 100-year-old vacation home, "HiLo," in Edneyville, NC, where they welcomed family and friends and created lasting memories.

Launched in 2021 as a young adults’ group, The Mids (affectionately known as “The Hotel California of NPC”) has evolved into a unique and inclusive community for those navigating life between high school graduation and senior adulthood. Unlike traditional groups that are geared specifically toward various demographics or interests, The Mids is designed to meet people where they are: whether that’s single, married, child-free, parenting, newly relocated, or figuring out what’s next.

This group isn’t defined by a specific life stage or checklist. Instead, we come together around shared values: friendship, faith, laughter, and a sense of belonging. Some of us are flying solo, others are raising kids, and some are somewhere in between. What we have in common is a desire for connection.

We gather on the last Tuesday of each month at rotating locations around town. Our time together includes fellowship, Bible study, and a variety of fun, casual activities tailored to the group’s interests. There’s no pressure, no perfect attendance required, just real people who want to do life together.

As the song Hotel California says, “You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave.” Our “Hotel California” group captures the idea of a space that feels warm, inviting, and almost charmingly inescapable. It signals that once you become part of our group, you’ll feel at home. So, if you’ve ever felt like you’re in a transitional or undefined phase of life and want a place to grow in faith while sharing laughs and making friends, this is the group for you. Come join us for faith, fun, and friendship. For more information, please contact the Church Office at npcadmin@newnanpres.org.

Elaine Ethel (Kern) Schramm of Newnan, GA died peacefully in home hospice care on September 13, 2025. She was 84 years old. A celebration of her life will be held at Newnan Presbyterian Church, 38 Greenville St, Newnan GA 30263 on Thursday October 9, 2025, at 1pm. Her final resting place will be with her husband (Walter Schramm) in Hollywood Memorial Park in Union, NJ. A graveside service will be held later this year.

Elaine was born in Newark, NJ and grew up in Springfield, NJ. She graduated from Centenary Collage for Women with an Associate of Arts degree in Secretarial and Business Studies in 1961. She participated in many social activities and was an active member of the Delta Psi Omega and Sigma Epsilon Phi sororities.

She met her husband, Walter, at the First Presbyterian Church of Springfield, and they married in 1962. Her college degree served them well, as they had multiple small businesses throughout their 62-year marriage. They welcomed all four of their children in NJ, and she loved entertaining all the young neighborhood kids at their house in Moorestown.

In 1973, Walter and Elaine moved to south Florida, where they lived for seventeen years. Elaine was a gifted and creative artist. While working at Worden's World of Crafts, one of her original needlework designs of a Christmas tree was discovered by a distributor. This helped launch their first business endeavor, owning and operating The Yarn Shop in Coral Springs, FL. They designed hundreds of original creations together, and some can still be found online today. While in FL, Elaine also worked as a legal secretary for a local attorney.

The couple moved to GA in 1989, living first in Peachtree City and later in Newnan. While working at Collector's Corner in Sharpsburg, she used her creative talent for decorating Christmas trees for nearly 20 years, sometimes decorating over 50 trees each season. Her Christmas trees were featured in the Newnan Coweta Magazine in 2007. She and Walter also owned and operated the award-winning Treasure House Antique Shop in Jonesboro from 1998 until their retirement in 2006.

She loved keeping in touch with family and friends all over the country. Elaine savored many of the joys of life, even as her health declined.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, Mary Effie Young Bridges, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and friend. Mary was born on May 19, 1931, in Moreland, Georgia. She was the second of 9 siblings and survived by only 1, Charles Young of Newnan. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dan Bridges, her grandson, Daniel Young Veale, her brothers - Bud (Giles Thomas), Jacob (Ann), Joe Jr. (Carolyn), and her sisters - Lucille Gordon (Ralph) and Sara Ruth Coggin (Asa). She is survived by her children - sons Alan Bridges and wife Connie, Joey Bridges and partner Beth Rupnow, and her daughter, Miriam Veale, all of Newnan. She is also survived by grandchildren: Corry Veale of Newnan, Noah Bridges and wife Gailey of Carrollton (with great-grandchildren Candler and Conley), and Grace Bridges and fiancé Noah Liu of Chicago, as well as many extended family members and friends in the Newnan area and beyond.

Mary started life in Moreland, Georgia, on the family farm. She grew up a member of White Oak ARP church in Moreland and spent her married life at Newnan Presbyterian. In her 80s, she returned to White Oak, where she felt at home among all her Hunter and Sibley relatives. She went to work at the courthouse in Newnan after high school for the Newnan school system.

Mary and Dan married in 1955 and moved to Atlanta, where all three children were born. When they moved back to Newnan in 1970, she returned to work for Coweta County Schools, from which she retired in 1993. She enjoyed her long retirement by quilting extensively, traveling with local senior groups, and taking care of all her grandchildren whenever possible. She loved her family and was a caregiver all her life.

Men's Outlook is a group of men that meet at 9:00 am on the third Wednesday of each month at the home of Tom Moynahan. We gather for fellowship, coffee, and pastries.

Men's Outlook provides an inviting space where men can build meaningful relationships, grow in faith, and encourage one another in a relaxed and personal setting. Gathering in a home fosters a sense of connection and authenticity, allowing men to openly share life’s victories and challenges while strengthening their walk with God.

God, in His infinite wisdom, quietly whispered to Ruth Joanna Frances Bondy Mallehan that her work here in this world was completed.

It was as if He had tucked the edges of her blanket around her and spirited her away from a world that at the same time had been very difficult but also filled with great rewards during her 94 years. Ruth Joanna Frances Bondy Mallehan of Newnan passed away Friday, Feb. 28, 2025, at Newnan Health and Rehab.

Ruth's remarkably interesting life story began on Jan. 23, 1931, in Bremen, Germany. She was the only child of the marriage of Erich Bondy, a native German, and Margaret Eunice Grout Bondy. After her parents' marriage, they went back to Germany, where her father had a successful employment. Ruth was born in Bremen, Germany. As the next few years unfolded, living in Germany was fraught with danger for the Bondy family. Mr. Bondy was of Jewish heritage, and the political climate of the time was not in his family's best interest. Since Mrs. Bondy was a native American, she could leave Nazi Germany with Ruth and go back to live in Michigan. As difficult as it was for her father to do this, it was the only sensible solution. He was of Jewish heritage and was only allowed to leave Germany some years later.

Ruth grew up in Hammond, Ind., where she graduated from Hammond High School and then attended the University of Indiana. At Hammond High she met the love of her life, Art Mallehan. They were married in 1951 and spent the next 68 years together. While raising her children, she attended Clayton State College where she received an associate degree in accounting. Ruth and Art moved to Newnan in 1979 where they became members at Newnan Presbyterian Church. Over her lifetime she volunteered with many organizations including 40 years with Girl Scouts (awarded the "Thanks Badge"), Women of the Presbyterian Church (awarded "Presbyterian Women's Life Award"), Council on Aging, The Newnan Pilot Club, Meals on Wheels and PEO, which is a professional women's organization whose mission is to enhance educational opportunities for women.

In addition to her parents, Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Z. Mallehan, and son, Arthur Kevin Mallehan. Her legacy of love and service will forever be a part of the fabric of her family, manifested in the lives of her children, including her daughters, Karen (Michael) Baker of Blairsville, Ga., Kimberly (Peter) Poolos of Newnan and Kelly (David) Burnham of Newnan. She was a devoted grandmother to Brandon Jones (Ashley), Courtney (Jeremy) Landman, Heather (Duane) Davis, Aaron (Jenny) Mallehan, Adam Mallehan, Eric (Suzanne) Baker, David (Maureen) Burnham IV, Alyssa (Dalton) Bunn; 15 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Her family will hold Ruth's memory close within their hearts for as long as they live; and as they retell the stories of her life, they will remember their wonderful heritage.

Walter was born in Summit, NJ and grew up in Springfield, NJ. He met his wife Elaine at the First Presbyterian Church of Springfield, and they married in 1962. They bought their first home in Westfield, NJ, and he worked for Shell Chemical Co., commuting to NYC for a year. He also went to school in the evenings and earned his real estate license.

Walter again applied his artistic sensibilities to several businesses including a booth at Collector's Corner in Sharpsburg. He and Elaine owned and operated the award-winning Treasure House Antique Shop in Jonesboro from 1998 until their retirement in 2006.

Walter was a devoted husband and dedicated family man, a talented piano player, a creative artist, and an excellent storyteller with a wonderful sense of humor. He was also passionate about real estate and enjoyed previewing, buying, and selling homes. Over the course of his life, he owned eleven different properties. He was a humble man, but he was proud that he was often able to "make something outta nothing."

Mrs. Linda Speed Hubbard of Newnan, Georgia passed away on Monday, August 5th, 2024. She was born in Augusta, Georgia on September 9, 1946, to the late Preston Brooks Speed III and Ellen Evans Speed. In addition to her parents, Linda was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, William Venable "Bill" Hubbard Jr., and her brother, Preston Brooks Speed IV.

Linda graduated from Terry Parker High School in Jacksonville, Florida and attended Erskine College in Due West, South Carolina. Her professional life included over 30 years with Leon County Schools in Tallahassee, Florida, where she worked in various roles, ending her career as the executive assistant to the superintendent.

Her favorite memories were made with her husband, children, and grandchildren including many vacations, holidays, and celebrations spent together. Linda was always willing to do anything her children asked of her, and especially anything her grandchildren asked! She was truly the definition of love. Linda made others feel special and celebrated, always uplifting those around her with many, many compliments.

Linda was an extremely devoted Christian; her faith journey and church family meant the world to her. Many of her closest friendships were made through her church community. Linda and Bill were members of Fellowship Presbyterian Church in Tallahassee, Florida before joining Newnan Presbyterian Church when moving to town. Linda served as a deacon at Newnan Presbyterian Church and particularly enjoyed caring for the elderly members. Her legacy will always be remembered as a result of the establishment in 2011 of the Bill and Linda Hubbard Endowment Fund at Newnan Presbyterian Church.

Linda will be dearly missed by all who knew her and most of all by the family she left behind. Survivors include her daughter, Kim Wise (Winn) and son, Tripp Hubbard (Kelly); grandchildren, Maggie deGolian (Phillip), Preston Wise (Maggie), Molly Hubbard, and Kegley Hubbard; sister, Janelle Siegel (David), sister-in-law, Joan Speed, and brother, James Speed (Rae).

A service celebrating Linda's life will be held at Newnan Presbyterian Church on Friday, August 9th at 11 a.m. with Rev. David Jones II and Rev. Dr. Harry Barrow officiating. Interment will follow at the historic Oak Hill Cemetery. Visitation with family and friends will be on Thursday, August 8th from 5-7 p.m. at McKoon Funeral Home. Condolences can be expressed online at www.mckoon.com.

           About Those Bells

“Wow - the handbells were GREAT today!” “I love it when the bells play!” We hear this every time the bells play, and we love that our music contributes to NPC worship services.

A bit of background about handbells. Bells have been in existence for thousands of years, but handbells developed in England in the 17th century. The first bells in England were huge and found in church towers. To ring them, ropes hanging from the bells were pulled by several ringers, and the art of changing the order in which the bells ring was called change ringing. Eventually, English towns began practicing change ringing with small, wooden handbells so they wouldn't disturb neighbors and to avoid the uncomfortable environment in the bell tower.

By the middle of the 18th century, group “tune ringing” - playing songs with the bells - was a favorite diversion in England, and soon nearly every village had its band of bell ringers. English handbells became a permanent part of the American scene in the early 1900s through Boston's Margaret Shurcliff. She brought eight Whitechapel handbells from England, then continued to expand the set. The Whitechapel Handbell became the model for handbells all over the world.

NPC’s instrument is currently a 4-octave set of Whitechapel handbells. Yes, all those bells are one instrument, played by a group of ringers. The church first acquired bells in the 1970’s, when we received a three-octave set as a gift in memory of Mr. J. A. Addy Sr. The handbells fell silent at some point for several years, and in 2014, I was asked to revive the bell choir. I had no experience with handbells, but luckily a group of seven folks were willing to give it a try - some of whom had played bells before - and we began to occasionally play simple pieces in church.

We became more proficient, grew to 11 ringers, and in 2019 were fortunate that a few generous members helped us expand our capabilities by purchasing 6 lower bells. In 2022, we purchased our 5 highest bells, completing the 4th octave and allowing some of the ringers to play four-in-hand. We also purchased a small used set of hand chimes, which are sometimes used with handbell music, or played by themselves. Each of these additions has helped us expand our skills and repertoire. Further, we owe much gratitude to the NPC endowment funds that have supported both the purchase of instruments and participation in handbell workshops and conferences to help us improve our skills!

Handbells are a big investment and, like any instrument, require care and regular maintenance. For example, our 4-octave set of bells would cost well over $40,000 if bought today. Maintenance for the entire set of bells is at least $3500 every 4-5 years. If parts need to be replaced the cost goes up, and individual bells sometimes need work between full services. Our original 3-octave set of bells was last serviced in 2020 and will need service during the next 24 months.

           We Need You!

We are very fortunate to have dedicated ringers who love to play the bells, some of whom have been active in this choir since 2014. Everyone does their best to attend Wednesday practice at 5:30 and play when we’re scheduled, but life sometimes happens. When it does, ringers may miss one or more rehearsals or scheduled services. Right now, because of work-related issues and illness, we need at least two additional ringers who can be regular substitutes.

            If you read music, we need you.  If you haven’t played handbells before, no worries.  I am more than happy to meet with individuals or small groups to teach basic handbell ringing technique, which would be helpful if you’ve never played bells before.  Also, there are basic ringing lessons on YouTube;

In addition to the sheer enjoyment of making music, playing handbells has other benefits. It can help improve hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills, reduce stress and anxiety, and provide a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction. Handbell practice always improves my spirits!

A fun poker game night at a house is the perfect way to unwind and enjoy some friendly competition with friends and family. Picture a cozy living room transformed into a mini-casino, with a large table at the center, covered in green felt and surrounded by eager players. The sound of shuffling cards and clinking chips fills the air, as laughter and playful banter echo around the room. As the night progresses, the stakes get higher, and the excitement builds, with everyone hoping to land that winning hand. It’s an evening of strategy, luck, and camaraderie, where memories are made, and bonds are strengthened. Whether you’re a seasoned player or a complete novice, a poker game night at home promises endless fun and entertainment for all.

"Supper Club" is one of NPC's CARE Groups, which provide members the opportunity to build new friendships and enjoy old ones by participating in fun activities outside of traditional church gatherings. The Supper Club is composed of and open to members that enjoy eating together. Each month offers something different: meeting at a popular restaurant for food and drinks, gathering at someone's house for a themed potluck, attending a cooking class or something we haven't thought of yet.

Purchase two round loafs of bread per worship service. One loaf is uncut for the Pastor to break during communion. Have the other loaf SLICED for intinction. We recommend using a loaf that has cooled off for the slicing machine. Instruct them to slice the bread once, then rotate it and slice it a second time perpendicular to the first. The result is a long-cubed bread that is easily held without congregants dipping their fingers in the juice.

If you would like to be reimbursed for communion elements, please turn your receipts into Karen Geeter along with a reimbursement form (available online). Alternatively, you may turn in your receipt with a note to Karen that you’d like to make the amount a contribution to the church.
