Obituary
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, Mary Effie Young Bridges, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and friend. Mary was born on May 19, 1931, in Moreland, Georgia. She was the second of 9 siblings and survived by only 1, Charles Young of Newnan. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dan Bridges, her grandson, Daniel Young Veale, her brothers - Bud (Giles Thomas), Jacob (Ann), Joe Jr. (Carolyn), and her sisters - Lucille Gordon (Ralph) and Sara Ruth Coggin (Asa). She is survived by her children - sons Alan Bridges and wife Connie, Joey Bridges and partner Beth Rupnow, and her daughter, Miriam Veale, all of Newnan. She is also survived by grandchildren: Corry Veale of Newnan, Noah Bridges and wife Gailey of Carrollton (with great-grandchildren Candler and Conley), and Grace Bridges and fiancé Noah Liu of Chicago, as well as many extended family members and friends in the Newnan area and beyond.
Mary started life in Moreland, Georgia, on the family farm. She grew up a member of White Oak ARP church in Moreland and spent her married life at Newnan Presbyterian. In her 80s, she returned to White Oak, where she felt at home among all her Hunter and Sibley relatives. She went to work at the courthouse in Newnan after high school for the Newnan school system.
Mary and Dan married in 1955 and moved to Atlanta, where all three children were born. When they moved back to Newnan in 1970, she returned to work for Coweta County Schools, from which she retired in 1993. She enjoyed her long retirement by quilting extensively, traveling with local senior groups, and taking care of all her grandchildren whenever possible. She loved her family and was a caregiver all her life.
The service celebrating Mary's life will be held at the McKoon Funeral Home on Thursday, September 25th, at 2:00 pm. The family will receive visitors at McKoon from noon until the service begins. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to One Roof Ecumenical Alliance, 255 Temple Avenue, Newnan, GA 30263. Condolences may be expressed to the family online at www.mckoon.com.
